"N. W. Cor' Center Family Dwelling Mr. Lebanon, N. Y."
Description
The Center Family Dwelling was completed in 1868 following much discussion of its style and of what materials it would be built. It was never a very satisfactory building and was demolished in 1912. Materials from the building were sold by the company hired to dismantle it to the Town of New Lebanon and used in the construction of the Union Free School built in 1913. That school was demolished in 2011. Some of the foundation stones from the Dwelling used in the School were saved to be used in some future project. Written in pen on verso: "N. W. cor' Center Family--Dwelling--Mt. Lebanon, N. Y." The verso also bears the initials HTC [Henry Terry Clough] in his distinctive hand written monogram. Clough, once a Shaker Brother who married and left the Society only to return and manage the Shakers' medicine business, was an amateur photographer.
