Description

The mount for this photograph is inscribed, "Grandpa Griswold, Dan & Chub, At the Shakers." The photograph of George Griswold, a hired man working for the North Family Shakers and the team he was using -- Dan and Chub, are posed with the west end of the family's Great Stone Barn in the background. George Griswold was living in one of the Shakers cottages in 1915 and he and his wife were working for the North Family -- he on the farm doing domestic chores. A journal entry for August 1, 1919 states, "John Van Hamlin, foreman on the farm for eleven years leaves the place and John Donovan takes the position. John Griswold also leaves. [NOC, mss. no. 8851] "John Griswold is probably a mistake and should have been written "George." George Griswold does not appear in the family journals after this date.
