Stereograph
Group of Shakers, North Family, Mount Lebanon, NY
ca. 1871
Description
The stereograph from which this half was taken was probably the work of James Irving or Troy, New York, an itinerant photographer that began photographing the Shakers at Watervliet, NY around 1869 and at Mount Lebanon around 1871. This view was made at the west door to the North Family's Second or Lower Dwelling (1835). The identification of the Shakers in the photograph is taken from a copy of the photography at the Western Reserve Historical Society where it is assumed that the identifications were supplied by the Shakers. The man identified sitting in the back row as Brother Galen Richmond, from Watervliet, but it is likely that it is actually Elder Richard Bushnell. Elder Richard was included sitting, because of his age, in a second stereograph made by Irving at about the same time -- possibly the same day.
