Shaker Barn New Lebanon, N. Y.
1880-1930
Description
The Great Stone Barn (1859) was thought to be the largest stone barn in the United States -- and may still be. In 1880 the flat-roofed barn was given a new slate-covered gable roof. Earlier the Shakers had decided that flat roofs were not satisfactory, writing on May 14,1873, "Roofers mending Flat Roofs, which are not satisfactory." [Source: NN, Shaker Collection, mss. no. 20] The Barn burned on September 28, 1972, leaving only the stone walls intact.
