Members of S[alvation]. A[rmy]. Visiting Shakers
1903-1904
Description
Members of the Salvation Army visited the North Family Shakers and performed on the lawn between the Second (aka Lower) Dwelling House and the Wood House (aka, Wash House). The Salvation Army held annual camp meetings at the Pine Grove in Lebanon Springs, New York, during the month of August. On occasion the Shakers attended these meetings and apparently invited members of the Salvation Army to visit them at Mount Lebanon. In 1903 (the apparent date of this photograph) on August 31, the Shakers noted: "A portion of the Salvation Army go thro our village. Br. Charles Greaves (a member of the North Family) their escort with team & large wagon. They give each family a special greeting. Sing, march and pray, leaving blessings on the Shaker Community" [NOC, mss. no., 10343]. In 1904, the same event took place with the addition information added by the journalist: "Many from our several families accept invitation to meet with them on the North Family lawn at 10 am. Their captain, four of the leading Sisters and Cadets exercise for us in one of their drill meetings" [NOC, mss. no. 10343].
