Description

Oval (not elliptical) box with sugar maple bands and white pine headers. Three swallowtails on box and one on lid; all tips inserted through box or lid wall and further secured by an iron tack. All other swallowtail fastenings and points securing headers in bands are wood. No evidence of paint, but exterior of box, except for bottom, appears to have been clear-coated.

Notes

This box features several of the characteristics of what are believed to be the earliest Shaker boxes including a more rounded than elliptical shape, swallowtail tips inserted into the box bands, and additional wood peg fastenings of the headings to the box band in the area of the box band overlap.
