Historical notes

Deeds, correspondence, timber agreements and financial accounts pertaining to land in Pennsylvania, called “Promised Land,” 1871-1905. This sizable tract of land was purchased jointly by Levi Shaw and Frederick W. Evans, Mt. Lebanon North Family and Trustee Ira Lawson, Hancock, MA, from Joseph Jones of Honesdale, PA. As part of the transaction, Jones acquired part of the recently closed Tyringham, Ma. community land and buildings. The Pennsylvania land was purchased for its lumber, railroad ties and tan bark. The land was finally sold at considerable loss in 1904. For a summary of these transactions see the Book of Records, Hancock, MA, Church Family Trustees.
