Scope and content

Correspondence, 1846-1868. Re: Shaker application for military exemption. Includes letter from William Leonard, Harvard, Ma, to Robert White, New York, NY, concerning military service of Br. Amos Butterick. Also includes letters and memorials from Benjamin Gates and Frederick Evans to President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William G. Seward. A printed copy of the memorial is enclosed. (Richmond 1014). Note: The 1838 action was defended by D. J. Hawkins, Second Family Trustee, and Jonathan Wood, Church Trustee. The 1850 proceedings were attended by Richard Bushnell, North Family Elder, and Jonathan Wood. For additional records see North Family Elders, Lawsuits and petitions, Folder 249-2.
