Historical notes

"Word of the Saviour" is one of those sacred sheet gift drawings that hides its full meaning from those not able to decipher its spiritual language. France Morin, in the catalogue for the exhibition "Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs," states that even though this drawing is largely incomprehensible it combines two aspects of Shaker life in its design: order and openness to the chaos of spirit possession.
