Historical notes

The Town of New Lebanon established School District No. 12 in 1820, incorporating the school already being operated at the First Order of the Church Family. The district boundaries encompassed the Church, Second, South and North Families. After 1835 the individual families periodically conducted their own schools. The District was operated under the direction of Shaker officials selected by the ministry and Church Family elders. For most of its history, the school provided instruction for girls during the summer and boys during the winter. The first non-Shaker teacher was hired in 1905 and the school closed in _____.
