The Lower Canaan Family was gathered under James Farnham in 1816 and moved to Canaan in 1824. As a branch of the Gathering Order, it was under the care of leaders appointed by the North Family elders. The family was always small and its economic status precarious. Periodically its financial affairs were placed under the supervision of the Upper Canaan Family. The Lower Family was closed in 1884.
